What happens when you get a tattoo?

At the tattoo studio you will have to show identification to prove who you are and your age.  Most states require that you be over 18 to be tattooed.  You will fill out paperwork and will most likely have to pay in advance for your tattoo.

The artist will explain the tattoo process to you and will have samples of tattoos for you to see.  You can choose from a design the artist shows you or you can create a custom design with the artist.

Then, you will go to the chair or bench where you will recline while you get your tattoo.  Some studios offer private rooms.

The area to be tattooed will be shaved and cleaned in preparation. A stencil of the tattoo will be applied to your skin.

Then, the tattoing with the needle will begin.  First, the outline, the line work, will be done.  Then, the tattoo will be filled in with the colors and shading.  One color is done at a time.

Will it hurt?  Yes, there will be discomfort and it will hurt.  The level of pain depends on your level of pain tolerance and what part of your body is getting tattooed.  Most people say that areas where you have more fat on your body do not hurt as much during tattooing as areas where you don't have as much fat.

When your tattoo is done the artist will make sure it is carefully cleaned and bandaged.  Then, you will be given instructions on how to care for your skin while it heals.  You must follow the instructions carefully in order to avoid scarring or infection.

   Tattoo Aftercare and Healing

After you have been tattooed the area will be raised, sensitive and reddish.  There may be a bit of oozing and bleeding.  The tattoo artist will usually apply some anti-bacterial ointment and cover it with some sterile gauze.

Every tattoo artist has his or her own recommendations and instructions that you will need to follow to insure that your tattoo heals properly and does not become infected.  You may be able to purchase aftercare products from the tattoo studio to use at home.  You can also puchase aftercare products at your local drugstore or on online.
